Baby Boys More Likely to be Stillborn

Published by Baby Boys under Having a Boy

September 26, 2008 – 1:30PM

Australian researchers are at a loss to explain findings that boy babies are almost 50 per cent more likely to be stillborn than girls

Australian researchers have found that boy babies are almost 50 per cent more likely to be stillborn than girls, but they are at a loss to explain why.

A national analysis of more than 16,000 births has revealed male foetuses have a significantly higher risk of being stillborn, as do Aboriginal babies and those with mothers with type one diabetes.

This information adds to data showing boys are also more vulnerable to complications and death if born prematurely, but researchers are unsure why these vulnerabilities exist.

“It’s a very interesting finding, and we can only assume there is something sex-related at play here,” said lead researcher Patricia Engel, a midwife at Hunter New England Health in NSW.

Stillbirths are one of the greatest mysteries in the medical world. Babies are 10 times more likely to be stillborn than to die from cot death, but neonatal specialists are unable to explain 40 per cent of cases.

Experts have been calling for more autopsies on stillborn infants and more basic scientific research into the causes of the phenomenon to bring down Australia’s static stillbirth rates.

Ms Engel and a team from the Hunter Medical Research Institute analysed 16,445 one-baby births and found one per cent were stillborn.

“Males had a 48 per cent increased risk for stillbirth after adjusting for birth weight, gestation and maternal diabetes,” the authors wrote in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Male stillbirths were also more likely to occur later, at around 30 weeks, compared with 25 weeks for girls.

Ms Engel said previous studies had shown that Aboriginal babies had a higher risk due to exposure to high-risk behaviour by mothers, like smoking and poor nutrition.

It was also well documented that foetal death was eight times more common among diabetic women, and significantly more likely in women who had had a previous stillbirth.

“The significance is that we now know that if a woman has a risk factor and her baby is also a boy, the pregnancy could be considered as very high risk,” she said.

“These situations require intense monitoring and special interventions to get the best outcome.”

Conceive a Boy With These Tips

Published by Baby Boys under Having a Boy

By Sandy Dean

If you’re trying to get pregnant with a baby boy, you probably already know or suspect that there are natural methods and things that you can do at home to greatly increase your odds of having a boy. This article will discuss all natural, inexpensive (often free), non invasive things that you can do to increase your chances of having a boy.

Timing Conception And Ovulation To Conceive A Boy Requires Exact Precision: First, I should explain the different characteristics between sperm chromosomes that will produce a boy and those that will produce a girl. Boy sperm are very fast, but are weaker than girl sperm. They begin to die off after only a few days whereas girl sperm can last for up to three to four days. If you try to conceive too early if you want a boy, all of the male sperm will die off before the egg is ready to be fertilized.

For a boy, you should conceive on the day of or the day after ovulation. (If you wanted a girl, you would have intercourse three days before ovulation.) Any earlier than this will be too early because the boy sperm will be gone before the egg is ready.

Obviously, then, it’s vital that you know exactly when your ovulation happens. There are many ways to predict this, including basal temperature, cervical mucus monitoring, etc. Some of these leave a lot of room for error though and you need to be very precise here. I recommend saliva ovulation predictors since there are so accurate, reusable, and inexpensive.

Sexual Positions To Conceive A Boy Baby: The boy sperm are fast, but they are also weak. So, you want them to spend as little time as possible in a hostile vaginal environment that could cause them to weaken, deteriorate, or die off. One way that you can give them a shorter trip is by using intercourse positions that place the sperm as close to the cervix and egg as possible – i.e. deep penetration.

Lowering A High PH / Turning A Hostile Environment Into An Alkaline One: A high vaginal PH / high acidity favors having a baby girl because the boy sperm can not withstand this hostile environment.

You can check your vaginal acidity with PH testing strips (you can get these online or at health food stores), but most women who are trying to have a boy will need to lower it. There are two ways to lower your PH. The first is through douching with specific formulas based on your reading. This is inexpensive and you can do this right before you conceive. The other is by consuming an alkaline diet and by avoiding acidic foods. I believe a combination of both methods yields the fastest and most dramatic results, but you can get there by just using the diet if you are opposed to douching. It may take a bit longer, and you’ll have to be diligent, but you can always monitor with the strips to see how you are doing and how far you need to go.

There are douche recipes and food lists available that can make this process easier and inexpensive. I’ve put together a website that takes a lot of the guess work out of conceiving a boy. You’ll find resources for the food lists, specialty douche recipes, saliva ovulation predictors, and PH testing strips discussed in this article. Egads Or Eureka! Overcome the Pitfalls of Choosing Uncommon Boy Names

Published by Baby Boys under Names Boys

By Janet Kimbrell

Today it is not so unusual to come across uncommon baby boy names, and it seems that some people put a great deal of effort into making sure that their child’s name certainly stands apart from the crowd. Parents in many cultures are now mixing and matching more traditional names with newer, less conventional ones to create one-of-a-kind names for their babies. Others look for names that are rather simple, but may not have traditionally been used as baby names. Some of the more unusual baby names currently in vogue are Sky, Rain, Apple and Ocean. There are even children proudly dubbed Wave and Planet.

Unique baby boys names have also been created by the selection of unique choices of letters to make up the name. Other unusual names originated from actual mistakes made in recording a baby’s name, such as with the name Oprah, which in the case of Ms. Winfrey was meant to be Ohpar. Other baby names are spelled in highly unusual ways in order to set them apart.

The problem with unusual spellings is that such circumstances can bring problems to a child later on, especially when they start school. For instance there is the circumstance of a child being named Ayker (and usually assumed to be pronounced “A Ker”), and the parents insisting that the child’s name be pronounced “EEkay”. If you choose to use your own individually created spelling and pronunciation rules in naming your baby, you should be prepared for the fact that many people may have trouble pronouncing or spelling your child’s name correctly.

Hollywood is often at the forefront of unique baby boys names. You will always find children who are the namesakes of movie stars with unusual names. Names also are taken from characters in movies, television and shows. A possible concern with many of these types of baby names is that it may date your child into a particular era, later falling from “fashion”, and in the future people may not understand or appreciate the reasoning behind the uncommon name. Not many children today are being christened “Farrah” for instance, but in the late 70s and early 80s it was a big hit.

Choosing from unique baby boys names to find a suitable name for your child can either be a blessing or a curse. It’s beneficial to remember that while an unusual name may certainly distinguish your child and provide them a strong sense of individuality, nonconformity may sometimes place obstacles in their path as he/she matures. So, choose thoughtfully and wisely to select the best boy name, and give him a gift he’ll be certain to treasure for a lifetime.

Choosing the Right Baby Shoes For Your Baby Boy

Published by Baby Boys under Shoes Boys

By Beverly Maniago

While a number of medical experts have said that baby shoes are necessary for babies, commonsense would say that this is not completely true. Baby boys need the protection of baby shoes on their feet, especially since they are still unable to discern the hazards around them. Infant shoes also have other purposes, such as providing warmth for their feet.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to find the right shoes for babies. The feet of a newly-born are different from regular feet, not just size but also in proportion. Unlike the regular developed feet, which are rectangular in proportion, baby feet are square-shaped. The width of an infant’s feet is as the as its length, making them wider than what the regular feet should look like. However, many shoe manufacturers do not consider this when developing this kind of infant clothing. Therefore, it is usually hard for parents to find baby shoes would fit perfectly on their children.

But while it could be difficult to find the right kind of baby shoes, it is extremely important since the littlest detail in a baby’s growth can alter or hinder their development. Children’s clothing and practically any kind of baby boys clothing can affect certain growth areas. In particular, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, giving a baby the wrong fit of shoes can make their first step harder. Parents, therefore, should not shop blindly-especially when it comes to children’s clothing, especially for infants.

Parents should first make sure that the baby shoes provide enough safety for the baby’s feet. These are for two reasons-the baby’s irregularly-shaped feet and the growth of the baby’s feet. This also provides comfort since tight-fitting shoes can cause cuts and sores, making them painful to wear. But do not buy your baby boy shoes that are too large since they can cause him to fall and trip.

The growth of babies feet is rapid and fast, so parents should expect to buy a new pair of boy shoes every three to four months, until the body of the baby has developed.

Lace-up shoes are also a poor choice of baby shoes; this kind of baby clothing should be reserved when boys are old enough to tie their own shoes. The lace of these shoes can also cause your baby boy to trip and fall, so they are very risky. Instead, parents can but soft-sole Velcro baby shoes, which are suitable for infants from those who are just starting to crawl to those who are beginning to walk. Soft-sole shoes are ideal because they are flexible and light, making it easier for baby boys to learn how to walk.

The most important consideration when buying baby boys shoes is the comfort and protection it can give. Later on, when your baby boy has grown, parents will have a wider range of choices. But until then, parents should prioritize shoes that provide comfort and protection.

Today you can find any type of shoe for any occasion. It is important to remember when you buy shoes for a toddler you should make sure they are lightweight and flexible for walking. The coolest looking shoes may be the most painful and inappropriate for your baby.

No matter how cool the boys shoes are they will be useless if you don’t take into consideration how comfortable they are. Toddlers are learning to walk. You should be able to hold the shoe in one hand and easily bend. When you look at baby clothes for boys and consider a pair of shoes to match you must buy a lightweight pair.

When you buy baby shoe for boys you should look at the comfortable factor. This is an important thing. A cool looking baby with stylish shoes on doesn’t look so cool if he is crying. They should be comfy. Feel around on the inside of the shoes to make sure there are no thick seams or sharp bits.

This also means not too heavy materials. It can really hurt a toddler’s feet and legs if the shoes you buy are too heavy. The weight is really important or the baby won’t want to walk. Some people can’t figure out why their baby is crying and all they need to do is take off the shoes. Be sure the shoes are lightweight and practical for walking.

Another reason shoes are excellent gifts for boys are because they are usually needed. Little feet grow quickly and it can be hard to keep up. So many gifts received are clothes for boys and not shoes. If you are looking for the right toddler gift you might want to think about a pair of slip on shoes that are easy to get on or a pair with Velcro. This way the toddler can learn to put his shoes on himself.

A good pair of boys shoes is important. You can find many different types of shoes. It is fun and practicle to buy toddler shoes as gifts for boys because most people don’t receive shoes. Shoes can be expensive and they are always appreciated.

Circumcision – The Facts

Published by Baby Boys under Boys Health & Happiness

By Beverly Sugarman

If you are pregnant and know that you are going to have a baby boy, one of the first decisions that you will need to make after his birth is whether or not you want your boy baby to be circumcised. There are many arguments for and against the procedure, so it may help you to understand exactly what it is for and why many people choose to have it done.

When a baby boys are born, the penis has a foreskin covering its head. A circumcision is the surgical procedure that the doctor can perform to remove your son’s excess skin before he leaves the hospital. One of the advantages to having the foreskin removed is the reduced risk of your baby developing a urinary tract infection during the first year of his life. As your son becomes an adult, some studies have shown that he will also have less of a chance of developing penile cancer or of contracting sexually transmitted diseases.

In the past, circumcisions were performed without any anesthetic as doctors felt that the baby felt only slight pain. Now it is general practice to numb the area, either with a topical cream or an anesthetic that is directly injected into the baby.

The procedure itself has all the same risks that accompany any type of surgery. Complications from a circumcision can include minor bleeding and possible infection, although these can be easily remedied by the doctor.

After a circumcision, special care will be needed when cleaning your baby boys penis area. You should keep the area clean with warm soap and water and avoid using diaper wipes. If the doctor has placed a bandaged on the area, you will need to make sure that you put on a fresh one every time you change him. You can also use a small amount of petroleum jelly on the inside of his diaper or on the new bandage to prevent the sore area from rubbing and creating friction, which can cause your little one additional discomfort.

Immediately following the procedure, the penis may appear to be red and swollen. A small amount of blood or yellow discharge in his diaper is not uncommon as well. You will need to keep an eye on the area and take him to the doctor if it begins to look infected or if he does not seem to be urinating properly. You will also need to check him for a fever, as this is also a sign that an infection may be beginning.

The decision to have a baby boy circumcised is usually based on religious and cultural beliefs. While the procedure is common in North America and the Middle East, in other areas of the world it is not usually performed. Again, while some studies seem to prove that the surgery is beneficial to the baby’s health, these results are not conclusive. As there is no proof that an uncircumcised penis is detrimental to a male’s health, the decision to have the procedure performed is entirely up to you.

A circumcision is entirely a personal choice for the parents of baby boys. If you are not sure about having the procedure done, you can discuss it with your doctor who can explain it fully to you as well as the risks and possible benefits that are involved to help you make the decision that is best for you and your baby boy.

5 Basics For Buying Baby Boy Shoes

By Stuart Benjamin

As you buy shoes for your baby boy, there are a number of factors that you cannot afford to let slip off your mind. Buying cute looking shoes maybe easy, but buying the right shoes is not. Here is a list of some important criteria that the shoes must satisfy before you buy them for your baby:

1. Size- When it comes to buying baby boy shoes, the size of the shoes might be very tough to decide on. Put it on the baby’s feet to see if it fits in well or not. Though the shoes should fit the baby boy just well, you might like to opt for shoes that are just a little larger than what required, for ensuring that the baby is really comfortable wearing them. This may not be a bad idea, as long as you know that the shoes are not going to keep slipping off. Baby boy shoes that are made of such material that is stretchable are things you must watch out for.

2. Comfort- Make sure the shoes you purchase are extremely comfortable to the kid. Check it well to know that it neither too warm nor to cold inside, and look for any faulty manufacturing technique, or any manufacturing accident, that might have made the shoes uncomfortable. The best way to ensure that the shoes are perfect in the inside, feel the insides with your fingers. Touch every corner of the inside wall, and feel it gently to see if it might hurt. Check the soles of the shoes thoroughly too. Make the baby wear the shoes to see how he reacts.

3. Strong- The shoes should be strong so that no matter how harshly your baby boy handles it, it never really tends to tear apart. It should be held together very well to resist the strongest of attacks. No matter how the baby twitches his feet or moves around, rubs the shoes roughly on the ground, it should not get worn easily. Such kinds of shoes are capable of caring for your baby’s feet the best.

4. Washable- As you buy shoes for your baby boy, you cannot forget the fact that the shoes will be subject to all kinds of mess. Therefore the baby boy shoes should be made of such material that can be washed and cleaned easily. This will make washing the shoes less frustrating and less time consuming for you, and will ensure the fact that the shoes continue to look clean no matter how badly the baby treats it.

5. Airy- Packing away your baby boy’s feet inside the shoes, especially for long hours is not exactly a very good idea. Shoes that cover up the feet completely, without letting any air to go in should be avoided, unless of course it is chilly winter time and you need to protect the baby from cold. Shoes that do not allow the feet to breathe are not only uncomfortable to wear, but also cause smelling of the feet in extreme cases. Sometimes this may cause minor skin problems too, if the child’s skin is especially delicate and the shoes are worn for prolonged hours.
